What exactly is a Social Enterprise?

The Future Melting Pot

Community Interest Companies?

Third Sector?

Voluntary, non-profit organisations?

The Big Society Agenda and social investment?

Social Enterprise – The buzzword of the moment.

Over the past few years we’ve seen a surge in the use of these terms in the news, mass media and many business & enterprise support organisations but do we really understand what they mean? Is social entrepreneurship really a new activity or just a fancy new title?

The Future Melting Pot will be exploring the local heritage behind what we now know as social entrepreneurship through the an innovative, Birmingham based documentary production and oral history project. The project funded by the heritage lottery fund will work with young volunteers, and future social entrepreneurs, encouraging them to lead and develop the project whilst learning about the social issues that led to the rise of these organisations.

In a time labelled as ‘the age of austerity’ and with rise of unemployment amongst the younger generation, social enterprise is increasingly being presented as an opportunity for young people to go out there and start their own social enterprises and create employment for themselves. In the light of these prospects, it is only right that this generation is equipped with knowledge of the past history that will shape their future enterprises.
